Installation Report: Dog Seat
Project Description
Like many Tundra owners, my wife and I are animal lovers and we have a small dog that loves to go for rides in the truck. In fact Biskit is actually the true owner of the
truck; I am just the operator and chief mechanic. The center console is wide and deep enough for Biskit but he tends to slide off too easily and he prefers a cushioned
seat just like the rest of us. We tried small blankets and pillows but they weren't large enough and they would just slip off. I went searching for something thick
enough to be comfortable, big enough for Biskit to sleep in, sized just right for the center console, and with a non-slip bottom. We found just the thing at a local
Walgreens and only had to make one small modification for the perfect solution.

Parts & Cost
- One round dog bed with a cushioned floor, found in the clearance section of Walgreens, $10.00, or you can get them anywhere for $20-$30+.
- One 16" piece of rubber non-skid mat, available at any hardware, craft store, or dollar store, $1.00.
Tools
(just the major items, not a complete list)
- Scissors
- Contact cement
Install Process
- Flip the dog bed over and lay the rubber mat on top of the bottom side.
- Trim the rubber mat to fit the bottom without hanging over the sides.
- Glue the rubber mat to the bottom of the dog bed with a thin spot of contact cement in the middle and on each of the corners.
- Let the dog bed dry for several days in a well ventilated outdoor area to remove the fumes from the adhesive.
Total Time: ~15 minutes
Comments
- Perfect Fit: This bed fits the center console perfectly with enough room for a small or medium dog to sit up or lie down and sleep. We
slide the center console lid all the way forward and this allows us to still rest our arms on the sides or back of the dog bed and we can reach the rear drink holder.
- Get Two: Biskit liked this bed so much that we went back to get a second one which he now uses in the house. Having a familiar bed makes him
more comfortable while on the road and we can take it into the hotels or rental homes so he sures get a lot of use from it.
- Safety: The non-slip bottom and high sides prevent Biskit from sliding or falling off the console during sudden acceleration or emergency
stops. For complete safety though we also purchased an adjustable dog seatbelt harness from Walmart for $19.97. The harness has a
metal buckle on the back which you can attach to a leash for walking, or to a safety strap while in the vehicle to keep your dog from flying forward in an accident.
When Biskit is in the vehicle for long trips we put the rear seat belt through the handle of a short but strong dog leash then we clip the other end to the harness.
This gives him just enough room to move around on the console but it stops him from hitting the dash, and when we hit a rest stop he is already leashed up and ready to go.
