Installation Report: Black Rubber Floor Mats
Project Description
Everyone will admit that the carpeted factory floor mats are marginal for looks
and not very good at all for protection, yet they cost a small fortune and the
dealers rarely stock the good mats at fair prices. The carpeted mats came
included with my Limited package but I took them out as soon as I could find
some decent mats to replace them. I briefly considered the WeatherTech and
Husky products which do seem like excellent mats, however I couldn't justify
shelling out close to $200 for mats which cost about $15 to manufacture, and I
rarely trek high volumes of mud, snow, ice, water, etc. into the truck so I
don't really need the extra high coverage anyway. After looking at all the
local parts stores I found the best set for my needs and tossed them in.

Parts & Cost
- I got all the mats in the Walmart automotive aisle. The front mats
were the widest, longest, deepest, black solid-rubber mats of all the stores I
looked at, and I think they were sold individually for about $15 each but I
can't remember. The rear mats were designed to match the front mats
and they were definitely sold individually for about $5 each. Oddly
enough every Walmart I have been to places the rear mats on the bottom shelf
near the floor and quite some distance away from the front mats so you may
have to look close and check several stores to find a full set. I tossed the packaging
out after installation so if someone buys these then please send me the UPC codes or
brand names / model numbers and I will post the info here.
Tools
(just the major items, not a complete list)
- Razor or exacto knife
Install Process
- Simply toss in the passenger and rear mats as shown above. Note
that I did not trim the top edges from the front mats - this overhang area
was used to hang the mats in the store but I left it attached for a little
bit more protection and you can't really see it anyway.
- Set the driver mat in place and be sure it is level and perfectly
aligned with the pedals.
- Push down on the rear edge of the driver mat until you can see where the
mat clips push up against the rubber. Cut a small "X" in these spots
with the exacto knife and push the mat clips through. Resist the urge
to cut a big line or hole, you just need a small cut and the clips will pop
through.
Total Time: ~30 minutes
Comments
- Easy Clean: Another thing I like about these mats is that
they are easy and quick to remove for vacuuming, washing, or drying.
The WeatherTech and Husky models seem like they would be a little harder to
take out since they are form-fit and much higher.
- Groovy: The alternating grooves in these mats are extra
deep which really helps to pull the dirt, dust, stones, etc off your shoes.
They also hold quite a bit of water, mud, or snow if needed since the
exterior edges are pretty high when compared to the other traditional mats.
- Pedal Down: These mats do not get bunched up under the
pedals but they line up nicely so that your heel sits on the mats while
using the pedals.
- Resale: If you ever resell the truck it will certainly help
to pull out the factory mats in brand new condition.
- Durable: Any similar mat would probably work just as well
but make sure they are solid rubber which will prevent them from cracking,
peeling, or fading prematurely.
