Installation Report:  Glass Break Sensor

Project Description
My 2007 Tundra Limited came with a nice VIP RS3200+ security system pre-installed.  Unfortunately Toyota omitted the glass break sensor just so they could make more money by selling it as an accessory.  Personally I found this highly irritating given that I purchased the absolute best truck model they had available in their entire lineup, it was fully loaded with an MSRP of more than $42K, and yet it was missing this key item that is not easily installed by most non-mechanical people.  Of course I wanted this accessory to keep my valuable cargo safer from the occasional smash and grab thief but I was certainly not going to pay MSRP cost for the part plus the high dealer labor to have it installed.

Parts & Cost

  1. Toyota part # 08586-34070 which requires you to already have the full VIP RS3200+ alarm system installed.  I paid $97.90 plus shipping from Wesley Chapel Toyota, 5300 Eagleston Blvd, Wesley Chapel, FL, 33543, 813-407-5973, ebaysales@wesleychapeltoyota.com.  If you only have the keyless entry without the alarm then expect to pay another $100-$200 or more for the full alarm system which is a different part number.

Tools
(just the major items, not a complete list)

  1. Socket driver or wrench with long extension
  2. Metric sockets
  3. Nylon pry tool or similar flat item

Install Process

  1. Remove the center console inserts and climate control panel from the dash.
  2. Remove the dash panel beneath the steering wheel.
  3. Loosen the left metal dash bracket which is up inside the dash (the included instruction sheet shows you where to look).
  4. Attach the mounting bracket to the glass break circuit module then attach this whole assembly to the left dash bracket and tighten.
  5. Connect the vehicle harness to the glass break circuit module.
  6. Remove the empty spacer plug and install the glass break microphone in the climate control panel.
  7. Connect the vehicle harness to the glass break microphone.
  8. Replace the dash panels in reverse order.
  9. Take your vehicle to the dealership service department and ask them to activate the glass break sensor option.  Some will do this for free but others may charge you $50 or more even though it only takes them about 2 minutes to do this with their service computer.  Unfortunately there is no way for you to do this yourself.
  10. Lock the vehicle and arm the alarm system.  Wait at least 30 seconds for the system to fully arm.  Do this before leaving the dealership to make sure they activated the sensor correctly.
  11. Tap firmly but carefully on the center of the driver window with the tip of your key to test the sensor function.  If the alarm goes off too easily or it does not go off at all then you may need to adjust the sensitivity dial on the glass break circuit module.  If you had to pay the dealer to turn on the sensor option then I would make them adjust the sensitivity for you to earn their money.

Total Time:  ~1 hour plus the visit to your local dealer
