Installation Report:  Spare Tire Lock

Project Description
My 2007 Tundra Limited came with the 20" alloy factory wheel upgrade.  I was hoping that the spare tire would also be a 20" alloy wheel but was a little disappointed to find out that it was a standard 18" steel wheel without the TPMS sensor installed.  Oh well, the spare tire is still a tempting target for theft since 18" wheels with brand new tires are not exactly cheap.  Unfortunately the factory spare tire mechanism can be lowered by anyone in less than 2 minutes with a jack handle or similar tool.  Fortunately Toyota makes a very good spare tire locking mechanism which I definitely had to get since I often park in out-of-the-way places or dark areas for long periods of time.

Parts & Cost

  1. Toyota part # PT276-34070 which includes the lock and key.  I paid $30.80 plus shipping from Wesley Chapel Toyota, 5300 Eagleston Blvd, Wesley Chapel, FL, 33543, 813-407-5973, ebaysales@wesleychapeltoyota.com.

Tools
(just the major items, not a complete list)

  1. Factory tire jack handle

Install Process

  1. Assemble the factory tire jack handle and insert it into the square hole between the center of the tailgate and rear bumper.
  2. Guide the tire jack handle into the spare tire winch mechanism.  This can be tricky and it helps to shine a flashlight under the truck.
  3. Lower the spare tire all the way to the ground.
  4. Push the black locking cone mechanism into the square hole on the winch mechanism.  It takes a good bit of pressure to get it to lock into place.
  5. Attach the key to the end of the tire jack handle and guide it into the spare tire winch mechanism.
  6. Raise the spare tire slowly until it locks into place.  Be careful to keep it centered and level.
  7. Store the key with your factory jack.

Total Time:  ~1 hour including cursing while you try to align the tire jack handle with the winch mechanism
