Installation Report:  Center Console Storage System

Project Description
The Tundra has a nice big center console with plenty of room for storing all sorts of things.  Unfortunately the default factory configuration is setup for hanging file folders, a laptop, a few smaller items in the middle removable tray, and some tiny stuff in the sliding shallow lid.  I don't know about most people but I'm certainly not going to store important paperwork or files in the Tundra let alone a valuable laptop with business data so this console space was pretty much wasted for my needs.  I tried to just remove the middle container and dump my junk in there but it was next to impossible to find anything and the corded items would quickly get tangled up.  Something had to be done so I headed to the store for inspiration.  I ended up with some modular storage containers from the fishing department that fit the bill nicely.

Parts & Cost

  1. Three clear plastic Plano storage containers, found in the fishing aisle of Walmart and many other stores, $2.97 each.
  2. Two small metal eyehooks taken from a picture hanging kit or you can buy them separately almost anywhere.
  3. One thin bungee cord rougly 10" long (unstretched) with a small hook on each end.

Tools
(just the major items, not a complete list)

  1. Awl or center punch

Install Process

  1. Start by emptying out the center console including the removable tray.
  2. Set the three storage containers inside, up against the passenger side with the latches on top and the handles facing the driver side.
  3. Use the awl or center punch to make a very small hole half way up the inside front wall of the console and about 1" to the right of where the third storage container ends. Make another hole in the same area on the inside of the back wall.
  4. Remove the containers and carefully install an eyehook in each starter hole.  Be careful not to thread the hooks unevenly or strip the holes since you want the hooks to grip pretty tightly.
  5. Install the bungee between the two hooks and then insert the storage bins behind the bungee.

Total Time:  ~30 minutes
