Installation Report:  Trash Bag

Project Description
It always amazes me that with all the modern conveniences included in new vehicles the manufacturers still ignore something fairly basic but important to everyone:  the all purpose trash bag.  Of course we don't want some huge 10-gallon kitchen pail and we need more than a little dash pocket but where can you place a decent-sized trash bag so it is functional yet not in the way?  I found the perfect solution about four years ago and have used it ever since.  It is a simple black bag which attaches to the headrest posts with velcro tabs.  It has a small zipper compartment in the bottom which holds spare liner bags so when it fills up you just toss out the full liner bag and pull up a new liner from the bottom.  The top closes shut tightly with velcro but it is easy to open with one hand from the driver seat when mounted in this position.  The bottom edge is just high enough to clear the lap and knees of most rear passengers unless they are really big so you shouldn't ever have to remove it, but if you wanted to remove it for some reason then just raise the headrest and pull the velcro strap to toss it under the seat or in the bed.

Parts & Cost

  1. Axius Deluxe Litter Bag UPC # 0-19912-18706-8 originally purchased from Walmart or Big Lots around 2002 for about $6, now available at Amazon for $4.20 while supplies last, and probably lots of other places.

Tools
(just the major items, not a complete list)

  1. None

Install Process

  1. Raise the passenger head rest.
  2. Install the spare trash liners in the bottom and one in the top.  Insert the top edges of the liner between the two metal snaps on each side and close them to lock the liner in place.
  3. Tie a simple knot in each velcro tab closest to the back edge of the bag.  This will take the extra length out of the tabs and ensure the bag hangs up high away from the rear passenger.
  4. Pull the tabs around the outside of the headrest posts until the bag is snug against the seat and fasten them in the front middle of the headrest.
  5. Lower the passenger head rest keeping the tabs hidden beneath it.

Total Time:  ~15 minutes
