Installation Report: USB Power & Air Ionizer
Project Description
Like most people I have a PDA but I also use a number of other devices including
the wife's cell phone, MP3 player, portable GPS receiver, etc. which are all
designed to charge from a USB port. Rather than install a separate DC car
cord for each device I just purchased a generic adapter which provides a USB
port with enough current (800ma) to charge even the high-drain devices. I had
to think of something to fill the other front socket and balance out the decor
so eventually I came
across an air ionizer and it was just the ticket. Two good gadgets for those empty holes at the
bottom of your dash.

Parts & Cost
- I got the USB adapter on ebay for $8 plus shipping but you can also find
them on dozens of other websites or in some local stores. The main
thing is to make sure it has a high current output, preferably 500-1000
milliamps if possible, and ideally a replaceable fuse in the tip. This
will be enough juice to get the job done.
- You will also need the USB cord for each device but these usually come
with the products and you might be able to use the same cord for several
devices. I have a retractable cable for my PDA so there is no slack in
the way and I can roll it up or unplug it when not in use.
- The air ionizer came from the automotive aisle at Walmart, I think it
was $9.95. It has a swivel base so you can bend it 90 degrees to fit
any installation position and it has a small blue LED light to show when it
is working. I tossed the package
out after opening it though so if someone buys this then please send me the UPC code or
brand name / model number and I will post it here.
Tools
(just the major items, not a complete list)
- None
Install Process
- Plug the USB charger into the cigarette lighter socket closest to the
driver. This is switched with the ignition so your truck has to be on
to charge the devices but it will prevent battery drain so you won't ever
have to unplug it.
- The air ionizer fits the accessory outlet perfectly and it uses a very
small current so it is OK to leave on all the time.
Total Time: ~5 minutes
Comments
- Speechless: Nothing to say except that these work well and
look good. I was skeptical of the ionizer at first but it really does
work well. I left it out once after cleaning and a few days later I
noticed a slight odor from dirty work clothes in the back seat. I
plugged the ionizer back in and left the clothes inside to test it - sure
enough no more odor after it sat overnight.
