Installation Report:  Alloy Wheel Locks & Valve Stem Caps

Project Description
My 2007 Tundra Limited came with the 20" alloy factory wheel upgrade.  These wheels aren't exactly pure gold but they aren't cheap either at roughly $500 each including the TPMS sensor.  Any clown with a speed wrench and some cinder blocks can make off with all of your tires in less than 20 minutes and your factory alarm won't even whimper.  Of course there are many decent wheel locks on the market and I definitely had to get a set since I often park in out-of-the-way places or dark areas for long periods of time.  While I was installing the wheel locks I figured I might as well add a set of aluminum valve stem caps to replace the cheap gray plastic caps which came from the factory.

Parts & Cost

  1. Toyota part # PT276-60984 which includes four wheel locks and one key.  I paid $43.75 plus shipping from Conicelli Toyota of Springield, waltc@conicellitoyotaofspringfield.com.
  2. I purchased the aluminum wheel caps as a set of four for $4.99 at a local Pilot Truck Stop.  Make sure to get aluminum caps.

Tools
(just the major items, not a complete list)

  1. Speed wrench
  2. Torque wrench
  3. Socket

Install Process

  1. Apply the parking brake on a level surface.
  2. Remove one of the factory lug nuts from each wheel and replace with a locking nut.
  3. Torque the locking nut to the factory setting (depends on your wheels, see your owners manual).
  4. Replace the valve stem cap and repeat for each wheel.

Total Time:  ~1 hour including including time to get all the stuff together
